Announcing, the 2011 I Heart Zine exchange.

To join the 2011 I Heart Zines exchange, please follow these guidelines.

The requirements below allow for a smooth and successful exchange.

After this year, I will be closing this site and ending this 5 year long creative exchange.

Requirements:

Your zine must be mostly about some form of art or craft.

You must write an article and a how-to project. The goal is to challenge yourself to create.
(please DO NOT submit an image-only zine)

This is your chance to share what you know with your readers.

Create 10 zines and you will receive 10 other zines back.

Size: Any size you want....a minimum of at least 5 folded pages = 20 sides

Binding: Any type you want. But it must have some kind of binding holding the pages together.

Title: give your zine a title.

About Page: Who are you, your blog/site if any, email, etc...

Remember to also include your name, e-mail, or other contact information some where in the zine.

Include at least one little gift in each zine: Just a little something for your reader to play and create with. For example snippets of fabric, or a small baggie of beads, a cut of lace, a skein of embroidery floss, etc...whatever....just a little something fun.

The more included the better.

Place EACH zine in a plastic bag.

It can be a zip-loc bag or a decorative plastic bag.

Commit to creating a quality zine. This is an opportunity to showcase your art, style and interests.

Take time to assemble, design, create and package your zine in the best,

most organized and clean way possible.

NYC Zine Fest

The NYC zine fest is coming up this Saturday and Sunday, June 27th and 28th.

I am scheduled to be in Portland that weekend so I will not be there.

Must-Have Zine books

If you are looking for books to help and guide you in the zine making process, here are a few that should really help.

I bought Stolen Sharpie Revolution from the Brainscan shop on Etsy. An excellent little book. It is updated and honestly, it is pretty much all you need if you are starting out. It covers it all.

Issue no. 5 of Dog Eared Magazine can probably be found on Ebay or directly from the site
This is also a great magazine. If you are going to get Stolen Sharpie, then also get this one.
It has lots of visuals on the process. Love this zine.

The Make a Zine book can be found on Amazon. This is a great reference guide. Love this one too.

As for the zine swap, I was hoping for a June exchange, but I don't think that will be possible.
So I will update you when I get a better sense of my schedule.

Issue no.2 my soulcraft zine is now available for pre-order on my Etsy Shop.

This zine has odd shaped pages, lots of mixed media and sewing projects and some of the pages are stitched with fabric or lace for that touch of color and texture. The picture below is a small sample piece.

This is a new zine I've come across. It is Jewelry 'the zine' and OH MY GOODNESS.....it is simply divine.

I am not a jewelry person, meaning that I don't work with metal and such, but this zine completely inspired me to give it a go. WOW! It is in color and has all sorts of projects, articles and artist profiles.

A super fantastic zine. You can find out more about it in Catherine Witherell's blog.

Welcome to I Heart Zines

Welcome to the I Heart Zines site.

I started I Heart Zines in 2007 to encourage and promote self publishing. I bought the domain and pointed it to a Blogger blog, then I moved it to Wordpress, then to Typepad and now here it is again on Blogger. Needless to say, it took a while to figure out the best place for it. Blogger has changed a lot and it works much better now than it did in 2007, so I think this is the BEST place for it.

I also host a zine swap once a year. All the information is posted here.

What is a zine:

A zine is a self published magazine.

I Heart Zines focuses on Arts and Craft zines.

How do you create your zines?

There are numerous ways, but I like the cut and paste method.

Basically, I create simple collages on 8.5 x 11 card stock or cover stock type paper.

Then I type and print out my articles. I use double-sided tape to adhere my work to the collage background.
